Excluding elaboration, construction and assembly of an electric bike is super easy! Its daily use emits reduces the amount of pollutants and greenhouse gases discharged into atmosphere as compared to traditional fuel bikes. .
The electric bike is economical and can be quickly amortized, especially if it is regularly used. Think of the cost of the least repair on an ordinary car. The electric bike is good for health! It allows you to do sport without any violent effort. Electrical assistance allows people who are unaccustomed to sports, the elderly and convalescent to exercise without strain. The energy required for VAE is negligible and cheap, a few amount a year and a very low maintenance budget.
The electric bike is good for the environment because it contributes to the congestion of cities and reduces the level of pollution in the city center. No exhaust, the electric bike is not noisy, does not emit CO2 during its travels and allows to move in the open air. The power-assisted bicycle uses only 1 kWh per 100 km, equivalent to one deciliter of gasoline, and “emits” the equivalent of only 13 to 17 grams of CO2 per km, compared with an average of 189 grams per car.
Electric bike: improvements for the future
Of course, each mode of transport has its shortcomings. The black point of the electric bike is the energy it requires. However, the vast majority of this energy comes from nuclear power. It is hoped that more and more energy will be provided by sustainable sources but this is not yet the case. Another delicate point is the level of the lithium batteries that equip them. Indeed, lithium being still a cheap metal, the industry has made little effort to upgrade it. Other constituents are polluting. The battery is however recyclable, this must make it possible to control this pollution.
How to choose an electric bike?
Before choosing the model that will accompany you on your trips, check out a few points.
- The price : An electric bike can cost very little or very expensive, from 300 to 3000 dollars or more. So there’s something for every scholarship. But for a VAE of correct quality for a regular use, count between 800 euros and 1.800 euros. Optionally, opt for anti-theft insurance in addition to the warranty, electric bikes being desirable objects for being stolen
- The battery: Make sure it is homologated in Europe. Ask about the price of a replacement battery and how to replace it. For if a bike can prove to be a good deal, the change of part can prove to be exorbitant. If your budget allows, invest in a spare battery, useful if you forget to charge your original battery for example. This extra battery can still cost you up to 700 euros. There are several types of batteries, lithium batteries and lead batteries. The lead-gel battery is heavy but has no risk of sagging, acid, memory effect and does not require maintenance. It is 100% recyclable. Its life expectancy is estimated at 3 years of use or 15,000 km. Lead-gel batteries are often the cheapest on the market but they are not resistant to winter temperatures and tend to discharge somewhat out of use.
- Weight: do not let all the benefit of the engine be offset by unnecessary weight! An electric bike is already heavier than a conventional bike: between 21 and 39 kg, compared to 13 to 17 kg for an urban bike on average. The less it will be heavy, the more you will benefit from the extra energy that brings you the electric motor.
